Bossard Memorial Library LIBRARY HOURS Monday - Friday 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Sunday 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM BOSSARD LIBRARY 740.446.7323 bossardlibrary.org 7 Spruce Street Gallipolis, Ohio 45631 Visitors to Bossard Memorial Library will have the opportunity to travel on an “anatomical safari” this fall as “BODY WORLDS: Animal Inside Out” opens on Saturday, Sept. 28. “Animal Inside Out” offers visitors the unique opportunity to view animals from a rarely seen perspective – through skeletons, muscles, organs, and circulatory systems. A variety of animal specimens will be on display at the library through Jan. 4, 2025, including blood vessel and organ configurations, and whole body plastinates, which allow visitors to view the intricate biology and physiology of some of the world’s most spectacular creatures. Real human specimens, procured through an established body donation program, will also be shown in direct comparison to animal specimens. “Animal Inside Out” will be the fourth major exhibit hosted by Bossard Library since 2016, and, as with the previous exhibits hosted by the library, “Animal Inside Out” will be on display with free admission. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended. Groups of 10 individuals or more should contact the library for reservations. The library will begin accepting online reservations for “Animal Inside Out” on Sept. 9 through bossardlibrary.org. Exhibit hours will be from 1-4:30 p.m. on Sundays, 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturdays. The library and exhibit will be closed on major holidays. Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS exhibitions have been seen by more than 55 million visitors across more than 150 cities around the world. The exhibitions rely on an established body donation program managed by the Institute for Plastination. Plastination allows for the permanent preservation of anatomical specimens without the use of glass barriers or formaldehyde. For more information, please visit bodyworlds.com. Youth Services Programs Adult Programs French City Writers’ Guild Ages 18 and over Both budding and experienced writers are encouraged to attend the monthly meeting of the French City Writers’ Guild. Writers can bring their written works of various genres for discussion. Guild meetings are only for individuals age 18 and over. Ages 13 and over Come out for Trivia Night and compete as an individual or play with your family or friends to test your knowledge of current events, science, history, pop culture, and more! In-B-Tween Club Ages 7-9 The first In-B-Tween Club meeting on August 20 will feature a reading of The Foodie Flamingo by Vanessa Howl with illustrations by Pablo Pino. Special guest Tina Elkins will present a fun program about food and nutrition. On August 27, the In-BTweens will enjoy a reading of When Grandma Gatewood Took A Hike by Michelle Houts with illustrations by Erica Magnus. Special guest Marjorie Wood will discuss Grandma Gatewood and her historic hikes. Attendees will also enjoy “trail” food and a special craft. Ages 3-6 On August 8, evening storytime will feature a reading of Ice Cream Summer by Peter Sís. On August 22, evening storytime will feature the theme “B is for Bus” with a reading of I’m Your Bus by Marilyn Singer with pictures by Evan Polenghi. Evening storytime is held twice per month and is typically a repeat of the previous Monday morning’s storytime. Children, ages 3-6, and their parents or caregivers are encouraged to attend. Evening Storytime Teen Book Club Ages 13-18 The Teen Book Club will be reading The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan for its August meeting. Copies of the book can be borrowed from the library. The eBook or digital audiobook can be borrowed from hoopla or the Ohio Digital Library (via the Libby app). The Teen Book Club meeting will feature the movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians (rated PG) based on the featured book. The Teen Book Club meets every other month at the library. Any interested teen, ages 13-18, is welcome and encouraged to attend. Permission form required.

‘Game on!’ Game Day Saturday Ages 12 and over (under 12 with an adult) Bring your friends and stop by the library for Game Day. Bring your own games or choose a game from the library’s large board game collection. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees are welcome to stay for the entire event or play games as time allows. Light refreshments will be provided. ‘Color Me Happy’ Adult Coloring Ages 18 and over Stop by the library to enjoy an adults-only coloring session. Coloring sheets and coloring gel pens/pencils are provided or you can bring your own. Bring a friend and enjoy a relaxing coloring session and genial conversation. “Color Me Happy” is only for adults ages 18 and over. No children are permitted. Weekly Programs Storytime Ages 3-6 On August 26, storytime attendees will enjoy a presentation about food and nutrition with special guest Tina Elkins, as well as a reading of T-Veg: The Story of a Carrot-Crunching Dinosaur. Yoga Ages 16 and over Join us for an hour-long Yoga session each Monday evening at the library with a certified yoga instructor. Please bring your own yoga mat or beach towel and wear comfortable clothing. Waiver form required. Pat-a-Cake Lapsit Ages birth-3 This month, lapsit attendees will enjoy various themes, including “Crayons and Colors” and “The Wheels on the Bus.” Each program features a book, songs, and rhymes for the youngest readers. Needlework Circle Ages 12 and over Anyone with an interest in fiber art is welcome and encouraged to stop by the library each Wednesday afternoon for Needlework Circle. Share your love of knitting, crocheting, sewing, or other fiber art with like-minded community members. Anyone with an interest in learning to knit, crochet, or complete other types of fiber art should also attend. Ages 18 and over The Adult Book Club will discuss Shelter in Place by Nora Roberts during its August meeting. Roberts is the New York Times bestselling author of more than 200 novels. Copies of the book can be borrowed from the library. The eBook can be borrowed from either the Ohio Digital Library (via the Libby app) or the hoopla app. Bossard Library’s Adult Book Club typically meets at 1 p.m. on the last Saturday of each month. StoryWalk at the French Art Colony The featured StoryWalk title for August is Bad Hair Day written by John Phillips with illustrations by Jennifer Jamieson. StoryWalk is located on the grounds of the French Art Colony, 530 First Avenue. StoryWalk is a great way for both children and adults to enjoy the great outdoors and great children’s books! A Back-to-School Book List Middle grade graphic novels to start the school year Graphic novels are a great way to engage readers of all ages, especially those individuals who are visual learners, and, as children prepare to go back to school this month, stop by Bossard Library to check out these graphic novels with engaging stories about going to middle school, navigating friendships, and fitting in. New Kid by Jerry Craft This Newbery Award-winning graphic novel follows seventh grader Jordan Banks as he finds himself torn between two worlds ⎯ trying to keep his old friends while fitting in at his new school. All’s Faire in Middle School by Victoria Jamieson This graphic novel by Newbery Honor author/illustrator Jamieson tells the story of Imogene as she begins the journey of attending public school after being homeschooled while growing up at the Renaissance Faire. Smile by Raina Telgemeier The winner of the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award and the first book in the popular Smile series, this coming-ofage story will resonate with anyone who has ever been to middle school or had to struggle with their own “dental drama.” El Deafo by Cece Bell Loosely based upon the author/illustrator’s childhood, this award-winning graphic novel follows Cece who has just started at a new school and has to navigate being the only Classic Literary Gold A century after Paris, France last hosted the summer Olympics in 1924, the games returned to the City of Light in July. The Olympic games will continue until August 11 with the 2024 Summer Paralympics beginning on August 28 in Paris. In celebration of the games and its host city, check out one of these classic novels, each set in Paris and available to borrow from Bossard Library: Les Misérables by Victor Hugo One of the most famous novels written in French, Les Misérables has been adapted into numerous films and for the stage since its publication in 1862. The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux Most widely known for its adaption into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber, this work of gothic fiction was first published in 1910 and is set at the Paris Opera House. The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas One of Dumas’ most famous works, this novel is set in the 1600s and follows d’Artagnan as he travels from Gascony to Paris to join the King’s Musketeers. The Hunchback of NotreDame by Victor Hugo Set in 15th century Paris, this timeless story also discusses the architecture of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks ⎯ NotreDame Cathedral.
