Visitors can view skeletons, muscles, organs, and circulatory systems, including whole body plastinates, of some of the world’s most spectacular creatures, including the world’s tallest and heaviest living species of bird and the ocean’s fastest swimming invertebrate ⎯ all preserved through the process of plastination. Groups of 10 or more should contact the library for reservations by calling 740.446.7323 x 229, 233, or 235. Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS exhibitions have been seen by more than 56 million people in 42 countries in over 160 cities around the world, including permanent exhibits currently on display in Berlin and Heidelberg, Germany, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. BODY WORLDS exhibits rely on an established body donation program managed by the Institute for Plastination. Plastination, first developed by Dr. von Hagens in 1977, allows for the permanent preservation of anatomical specimens without the use of glass barriers or formaldehyde. The animal specimens featured in “Animal Inside Out” are acquired through cooperation with various zoos, veterinary groups, and other organizations. No animals were harmed or killed for the exhibition. To learn more about BODY WORLDS or the remarkable process of plastination, please visit www.bodyworlds.com.
