Bossard Memorial Library Summer Reading Program kick-off slated for June 1 Bossard Library is once again partnering with the Gallia -Vinton Educational Service Center (ESC) for its Summer Reading Program kick-off event on Saturday, June 1. Between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., children of all ages and their families are encouraged to stop by the library to enjoy a 1950’s-themed sock hop. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their best 1950’s attire and enjoy shaved ice and hotdogs. Live music will be in the library’s Riverside Room, a DJ will provide music outdoors, and a Fonzie impersonator will be on hand for photos. Numerous games and interactive stations will also be available on the library grounds and will include hula hoops, hop scotch, ring toss, a limbo station, as well as a 1950’s photo booth. Children can also complete a paint by number craft and a milkshake craft. Attendees are also encouraged to view various 1950’s historical “artifacts,” as well as classic 1950’s cars. All prizes and treats will be available while supplies last. This year’s Summer Reading Program is themed “Adventure Begins at Your Library” and will include programs and events throughout the summer for children, tweens, and teens. Each year, the Summer Reading Program provides children the opportunity to earn prizes for reading as they engage with their local library through fun programs and activities. Youth Services Programs Adult Programs French City Writers’ Guild Ages 18 and over Both budding and experienced writers are encouraged to attend the monthly meeting of the French City Writers’ Guild. Writers can bring their written works of various genres for discussion. French City Writers’ Guild meetings are only for individuals age 18 and over as mature themes may be discussed. Light refreshments will be provided. Ages 13 and over Come out for Trivia Night and compete as an individual or play with your family or friends to test your knowledge of current events, science, history, pop culture, and more! Trivia Night is free and open to teens, adults, and families with children who are age 13 and over. Trivia Night Ages 8-18 The Tween and Teen Book Clubs will meet at Final Boss Con at the University of Rio Grande Lyne Center on Saturday, May 4. Admission is free for members of Bossard’s Teen and Tween Book Clubs attending this event with the library. Final Boss Con features popular fandom quizzes, video game tournaments, cosplay contests, vendors, and more! Tween & Teen Book Club In-B-Tween Club Ages 7-9 The In-B-Tween Club meeting in May will feature a reading of Cecily Cicada by Kita Helmetag Murdock and Patsy Helmetag. Attendees will learn about the interesting life cycle of cicadas, make a bug jar craft, decorate “bug bags,” and enjoy a “bug dig” in dirt. The In-B-Tween Club is for children, ages 7-9, and their parents or caregivers. Each meeting features a story, crafts, and games with a fun and engaging theme. Ages 3-6 Stop by the library for evening storytime for children, ages 3-6, and their parents or caregivers. On May 9, children will enjoy “S is for Sunshine” storytime featuring a reading of The Sun Is Late and So Is the Farmer by Philip C. Stead with illustrations by Erin E. Stead. On May 23, evening storytime will feature a reading of Never, Ever Shout in a Zoo by Karma Wilson with illustrations by Doug Cushman. ‘Game on!’ Game Day Saturday Ages 12 and over (under 12 with an adult) Bring your friends and stop by the library for Game Day. Bring your own games or choose a game from the library’s large board game collection. All ages and skill levels are welcome, but children who are age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees can stay for the entire event or just for a few hours. ‘Color Me Happy’ Adult Coloring Ages 18 and over Stop by the library to enjoy an adults-only coloring session. Coloring sheets and coloring gel pens/pencils are provided or you can bring your own. Bring a friend and enjoy a relaxing coloring session and genial conversation. “Color Me Happy” is only for adults ages 18 and over. No children are permitted. Storytime features stories, songs, and crafts with engaging and educational themes for children. Yoga Ages 16 and over Join us for an hour-long Yoga session each Monday evening in the library’s Riverside Room with a certified yoga instructor. Please bring your own yoga mat or beach towel and wear comfortable clothing. Waiver form required. Pat-a-Cake Lapsit Ages birth-3 Join us each Wednesday morning for lapsit as stories, rhymes, and songs with fun and engaging themes are presented for the youngest of readers and their parents or caregivers. Needlework Circle Ages 12 and over Anyone with an interest in fiber art is welcome and encouraged to stop by the library each Wednesday afternoon for Needlework Circle. Share your love of knitting, crocheting, sewing, or other fiber art with like-minded community members. Anyone with an interest in learning to knit, crochet, or complete other types of fiber art should also attend. Ages 18 and over The Adult Book Club will discuss Hero of Two Worlds: The Marquis de Lafayette in the Age of Revolution by Mike Duncan during its May meeting. Copies of the physical book can be borrowed from the library. The audiobook and eBook can be borrowed from the Ohio Digital Library, while the eBook is available on hoopla. Adult Book Club meetings are typically held at 1 p.m. the last Saturday of each month. All interested readers are welcome and encouraged to attend. Steampunk Festival returns to Gallipolis Bossard Library, in conjunction with the Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum, will host the Second Annual Steampunk Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the museum located at 918 Third Avenue in Gallipolis. Admission is free and all ages are welcome. Guests are invited to attend dressed in Steampunk attire and participate in a costume contest. Prizes in the costume contest will be furnished by Final Boss Con. Stop by to explore the museum and model railroad display, enjoy food concessions, as well as photo opportunities in the railroad cars and engines. Steampunk and fandom items will be available to purchase from various vendors and attendees can view antique cars and an antique fire engine, as well as gas and steam-powered machinery. Visit StoryWalk at the French Art Colony The featured StoryWalk title for May is Ten Dragon Eggs by Lynda Graham-Barber with illustrations by Jeffrey Ebbeler. StoryWalk is located on the grounds of the French Art Colony, 530 First Avenue. StoryWalk is a great way for both children and adults to enjoy the great outdoors and great children’s books! Library hosts ‘Opportunity Bus’ trip Bossard Library’s inaugural “Opportunity Bus” trip was held on Saturday, April 27 as over 50 individuals and families traveled via charter bus to Columbus, Ohio, to visit the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) and the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition currently on display at COSI. The bus trip was offered at no charge to participants, who were required to pre-register for the full-day event. Adult participants were required to have a goodstanding physical library card, and those under age 18 were required to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Participants had to be age five or older. This unique program aligns with the library’s goal of providing educational and entertainment opportunities to its community.
