Bossard Memorial Library ‘Animal Inside Out’ Visit the library through January 4 to view world-renowned anatomy exhibit Gunther von Hagens’ “BODY WORLDS: Animal Inside Out” exhibition opened at the library on September 28 and hundreds of visitors have already viewed the “anatomical safari” offered by this unique exhibit. A wide variety of animal specimens, from the tallest land animal to the smallest snail, are on display at the library through January 4, 2025. Specimens include blood vessel and organ configurations, as well as several whole body plastinates of some of the world’s most spectacular creatures. The fourth major and largest exhibit hosted by Bossard Library since 2016, “Animal Inside Out” provides visitors with an educational experience unlike any other as they view both exotic and familiar animals through a rarely seen perspective. Admission to “Animal Inside Out” is free and walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended. Online reservations can be made at bossardlibrary.org. Exhibitions produced by BODY WORLDS have been seen by more than 55 million visitors across more than 150 cities around the world. These exhibits rely on an established body donation program managed by the Institute for Plastination. The animal specimens featured in “Animal Inside Out” are acquired through cooperation with various zoos, veterinary groups, and other organizations. No animals were harmed or killed for the exhibition. Plastination, first developed by Dr. von Hagens in 1977, allows for the permanent preservation of anatomical specimens without the use of glass barriers or formaldehyde. ‘Game on!’ Game Day Saturday Ages 12 and over (under 12 with an adult) Bring your friends and stop by the library for Game Day. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees are welcome to stay for the entire event or play games as time allows. Youth Services Programs Adult Programs Trivia Night Ages 13 and over Trivia Night will be held at the Colony Club, 418 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, in October. In-B-Tween Club Ages 7-9 On Tuesday, October 15, the In-B-Tweens and their parents or caregivers are encouraged to come to the Gallipolis Fire Department, 2018 Chestnut Street, Gallipolis, for a special event. The In-B-Tweens will get to tour the fire station, listen to a presentation from the fire fighters about fire safety, and enjoy snacks and games. In addition, attendees will also enjoy a reading of The Smokey Bear Story from the U.S. Forest Service in honor of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday. To celebrate, the In-B-Tweens will be encouraged to read five books about fire prevention or the environment. Teen Book Club Ages 13-18 The Teen Book Club will meet at the library for its October meeting before walking to the John Gee Black Historical Center for a tour of the facility and discussion of the book. The featured book is African Town by Irene Latham and Charles Waters. A novel-in-verse, African Town was inspired by true events related to the last slave ship to bring Africans to America in 1860. Ages 3-6 Join us for storytime at the Gallia Academy High School library, 2855 Centenary Road, Gallipolis, featuring stories with the soccer athletes of GAHS. Featured books will include Maisy Plays Soccer by Lucy Cousins, Soccer Beat by Sandra Gilbert Brug with illustrations by Elisabeth Moseng, and Dino-Soccer by Lisa Wheeler with illustrations by Barry Gott. ‘Color Me Happy’ Adult Coloring Ages 18 and over Adult coloring will be held at the Gallipolis Municipal Building, 333 Third Avenue, Gallipolis, in October. Coloring sheets and coloring gel pens/pencils will be provided or you can bring your own. Bring a friend and enjoy a relaxing coloring session and genial conversation. “Color Me Happy” is only for adults ages 18 and over. No children are permitted. Weekly Programs (Please note: Due to the “Animal Inside Out” exhibit, which will be open at the library until January 4, some programs will be held at offsite locations in October. Storytime Ages 3-6 On Tuesdays, Oct. 8, 15, and 29, storytime will be held at the Gallipolis First Church of God, 1723 State Route 141, Gallipolis. On Monday, Oct. 21, storytime will be held at the Gallia Academy High School library, 2855 Centenary Road, Gallipolis. Yoga Ages 16 and over Yoga will be held each Monday evening in October at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 541 Second Avenue, Gallipolis. Waiver form required. Pat-a-Cake Lapsit Ages birth-3 Lapsit will be held each Thursday morning in October at the Gallipolis First Church of God, 1723 State Route 141, Gallipolis. Needlework Circle Ages 12 and over Needlework Circle will continue to be held each Wednesday afternoon at the library. Anyone age 12 and over with an interest in any of the fiber arts is welcome and encouraged to attend. Ages 18 and over The Adult Book Club will meet at the Gallipolis Municipal Building, 333 Third Avenue, for its October meeting. The featured book is The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. Copies of the book can be borrowed from the library. The audiobook and eBook can be borrowed from the hoopla app or the Ohio Digital Library via the Libby app. Bossard Library’s Adult Book Club typically meets on the last Saturday of each month. Adult Book Club French City Writers’ Guild Ages 18 and over Both budding and experienced writers are encouraged to attend the monthly meeting of the French City Writers’ Guild. Writers are encouraged to discuss their original works of various genres, including non-fiction, poetry, genre fiction, and drama. Guild meetings are only for individuals age 18 and over.

StoryWalk at the French Art Colony The StoryWalk title for October is When Grandma Gatewood Took a Hike by Michelle Houts with illustrations by Erica Magnus. StoryWalk is located on the grounds of the French Art Colony, 530 First Avenue. StoryWalk is a great way for both children and adults to enjoy the great outdoors and great children’s books! The Third Annual Cemetery Walk will return to the Pine Street Cemetery and Pine Street Colored Cemetery beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 in Gallipolis. This free program, which is being sponsored by Bossard Library, will continue until 4 p.m. During the event, several living historians, dressed in period costumes, will provide commentary on the history of Gallipolis and Gallia County through several of its citizens buried at the two historic cemeteries. In addition to the library, this event is being co-sponsored by the Our House Museum, the Cadot-Blessing Camp No. 126 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Gallia-Vinton Educational Service Center, the John Gee Black Historical Center, the Gallia County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum. In addition, Christy Perry Tuohey, author of A Place of Rest for Our Gallant Boys: The U.S. Army General Hospital at Gallipolis, Ohio, 1861-1865, will be available at the event for questions and will have copies her book for sale. All ages are encouraged and welcome to attend the Cemetery Walk to learn more about the rich history of Gallipolis and Gallia County. To learn more, please contact the library’s Reference Department at 740.446.7323 x 241 or 242. ‘Here Lies the History of Gallipolis’ Ohio History Day research event returns to library From 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, Bossard Library will host an Ohio History Day Research Day for students who wish to hone their History Day skills. This event, which is being held in conjunction with the Gallia-Vinton Educational Service Center, will help students learn more about history research and connect with experts to build their research skills. Attendees will learn how to find reputable primary and secondary sources, will be able to practice writing a thesis, and will also learn how to utilize online catalogs, search through databases, and explore the library’s collection. Mentors will also be available for one-on-one guidance for students to discuss the next steps for their project. Registration for this free event is required. Please visit bossardlibrary.org to sign up. History Day is open to all interested middle and high school students and encourages students to conduct in-depth, original research on historical topics. Participants later present their findings at regional competitions. Students who qualify can advance to state and even national competitions.
