StoryWalk at the French Art Colony The StoryWalk title for October is When Grandma Gatewood Took a Hike by Michelle Houts with illustrations by Erica Magnus. StoryWalk is located on the grounds of the French Art Colony, 530 First Avenue. StoryWalk is a great way for both children and adults to enjoy the great outdoors and great children’s books! The Third Annual Cemetery Walk will return to the Pine Street Cemetery and Pine Street Colored Cemetery beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 in Gallipolis. This free program, which is being sponsored by Bossard Library, will continue until 4 p.m. During the event, several living historians, dressed in period costumes, will provide commentary on the history of Gallipolis and Gallia County through several of its citizens buried at the two historic cemeteries. In addition to the library, this event is being co-sponsored by the Our House Museum, the Cadot-Blessing Camp No. 126 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Gallia-Vinton Educational Service Center, the John Gee Black Historical Center, the Gallia County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum. In addition, Christy Perry Tuohey, author of A Place of Rest for Our Gallant Boys: The U.S. Army General Hospital at Gallipolis, Ohio, 1861-1865, will be available at the event for questions and will have copies her book for sale. All ages are encouraged and welcome to attend the Cemetery Walk to learn more about the rich history of Gallipolis and Gallia County. To learn more, please contact the library’s Reference Department at 740.446.7323 x 241 or 242. ‘Here Lies the History of Gallipolis’ Ohio History Day research event returns to library From 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, Bossard Library will host an Ohio History Day Research Day for students who wish to hone their History Day skills. This event, which is being held in conjunction with the Gallia-Vinton Educational Service Center, will help students learn more about history research and connect with experts to build their research skills. Attendees will learn how to find reputable primary and secondary sources, will be able to practice writing a thesis, and will also learn how to utilize online catalogs, search through databases, and explore the library’s collection. Mentors will also be available for one-on-one guidance for students to discuss the next steps for their project. Registration for this free event is required. Please visit bossardlibrary.org to sign up. History Day is open to all interested middle and high school students and encourages students to conduct in-depth, original research on historical topics. Participants later present their findings at regional competitions. Students who qualify can advance to state and even national competitions.
