We will be discussing Mary Chesnut's Civil War edited by C. Vann Woodward.
Mary Chesnut was a Southern-aristocratic daughter of the governor of South Carolina and the wife of Confederate General and aide to President Jefferson Davis, James Chesnut, Jr.
Edited and annotated by C. Vann Woodward, this definitive edition of her journal, one of the best firsthand records of the Confederate experience, captures vividly the war in the Old South, from the first hopeful days to the ruinous end. The book teems with interesting portraits, with reports of battles and balls, and with highly evocative descriptions of everyday scenes that bring the period to life.
Winner of the 1982 Pulitzer Prize in History.
Sam Wilson, Professor of History at the University of Rio Grande will be the moderator for the discussion.
