The Real Outlander: What was Scotland Like in 1745

Turn back time to the 1740's with Hunter and Breanna Cogle as they demonstrate what life was like during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.

In Scotland in the 1740's, men took up arms against the British in hopes of restoring Prince Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie", to the throne. Many men brought their families with them on campaign during this time. After a number of battles, the Scots were defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1745. The British then proceeded to dismantle Highlander and Scottish clan culture. Thousands of Jacobite sympathizers fled to the 13 colonies and settled in New York, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

Hunter will discuss the clothing, equipment, weapons and tactics of a Highland Tacksman of Clan MacLachlan. He will offer insights on who the Jacobites were, what their cause was, and what became of them.

Breanna will discuss the life and role of women in the clan system, her clothing and kit, as well as her duties as the wife of a tacksman and officer of the army.
