About ANIMAL INSIDE OUT

Goat

See the world's most spectacular creatures like never before!

Explore the intricate biology, zoology, and physiology of the world's most spectacular creatures, large and small, in this fascinating exhibition by BODY WORLDS creator and anatomist, Dr. Gunther von Hagens and curator, Dr. Angelina Whalley.

Animal Inside Out takes visitors on an anatomical safari of more than 100 specimens. Each animal is painstakingly preserved by the remarkable process of Plastination, invented by Dr. von Hagens.

Plastination is the groundbreaking method of halting decomposition to preserve anatomical specimens for scientific and medical education. The process involves extracting all bodily fluids and soluble fat from specimens, replacing them through vacuum-forced impregnation with reactive resins and elastomers, and then curing them with light, heat or certain gases, which give the specimens rigidity and permanence.

This memorable and educational exhibition is dedicated to the animals' insides. A look underneath the skin and fur allows a view of the animals' bone structure, muscles, nervous system and organs at a level of detail never experienced before.

From goats to giraffes, and octopuses to ostriches, visitors will discover the form and function of animals both exotic and familiar. Highlights of plastinates featured in Animal Inside Out include the world's tallest mammal, the giraffe, and the rarely seen giant squid; a magnificent bull, with its heart five times the size of a human's; and a reindeer, with hooves that adapt to the changing seasons.

Everyone interested in animals, male or female, young or old, is invited to participate in an easy to understand anatomical safari. In a manner that is more graphic and more detailed than any anatomy textbook could ever be, the exhibition relates interesting facts about all the animals shown. A visit to the exhibition provides unique insights into the animals' interiors and opens up a 3rd dimension of experience. Visitors will develop a deeper appreciation of our planet in all its diversity. Amazing differences between humans and animals will be uncovered, while also learning just how much we have in common.

The exhibition aims to draw our attention to the vulnerability of the animal kingdom and instills a greater appreciation for endangered species. The more we know about our co-habitants on planet Earth, and how similar they are to us, the more we can learn to treat animals with the utmost care and respect.

Animal Inside Out was conceived when Dr. von Hagens' Institute for Plastination was first donated a gorilla from a German zoo, followed by a giraffe, and later an elephant. More animals followed, and the collection grew.

Animal Inside Out is made possible through cooperation between various veterinary programs, zoos, private donations and animal organizations. No animal was harmed or killed for this exhibition.

There are now two animal exhibitions touring Europe and North America. They are considered the pinnacle of Dr. von Hagens' work as an anatomist, both because they showcase a huge step forward in the development of the preservation technique, and because of the large scale and sheer mass of the specimens.
