The Library's new StoryWalk title is now on display at the French Art Colony.
Our title for October is When Grandma Gatewood Took a Hike written by Michelle Houts and illustrated by Erica Magnus.
Follow 67-year-old Gallia County native Emma "Grandma" Gatewood as she attempts to hike the Appalachian Trail.
It all started when Grandma Gatewood, after reading a story about men hiking the trail, decided, "If a man can do it, so can I".
Her first attempt, unfortunately, ended with Grandma becoming loast and covered with scratches and black fly welts.
Grandma, however, was not one to give up and on her second try, she became the first woman to solo hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail in one thru-hike.
Grandma's grit and determination helped her to hike over two thousand miles and at the end be able to say, "I did it. I said I'd do it, and I've done it!"

Make sure to attend the opening reception for the Grandma Gatewood: A Celebration of Life Exhibit on Saturday, October 26, 2024 from 1:00 -- 3:00 PM at the French Art Colony. Grandma's great-granddaughter, Marjorie Gilliam Wood, will offer a presentation about Grandma Gatewood at 1:00 and 2:00 P.M.
